Dynamic QR Code

Reading time3 min read

A dynamic QR code is a QR code that points to a short redirect URL rather than directly to your menu page. This means you can change where the code sends people, update the menu it links to, or even swap the entire destination without ever reprinting the physical code on your tables. The printed code stays the same while the content behind it changes.

Why it matters for your restaurant

The practical advantage of a dynamic QR code is that it future-proofs your investment. Once you print QR codes on table tents, stickers, coasters, or signage, you do not want to throw them all away because you switched menu platforms or changed your website URL. With a dynamic code, you update the redirect and the existing printed codes keep working perfectly.

This is especially valuable for restaurants that change menus frequently. If you have a different lunch menu and dinner menu, a dynamic QR code can point to the lunch menu during the day and automatically switch to the dinner menu in the evening. Seasonal menu changes, holiday specials, or event-specific menus can all be handled by updating the link rather than printing new codes.

How it works in practice

Here is how it typically works. You sign up with a QR code provider and create a dynamic code. The provider gives you a short URL, something like qr.example.com/your-restaurant, which redirects to your actual menu page. You print this QR code on your table materials.

Six months later, you switch to a new menu platform with a different URL. Instead of reprinting 30 table tents, you log into your QR code provider, update the redirect destination, and every existing code now sends guests to your new menu. The change takes effect immediately.

Dynamic QR codes also typically come with scan analytics. You can see how many times your code was scanned, at what time of day, and sometimes even from which device type. If you have 300 scans per week, you know your digital menu is getting strong adoption. If scans suddenly drop, maybe a table tent fell behind a booth or your code is too small to scan easily.

The cost is usually a small monthly or annual fee, often between $5 and $20 per month, which is trivial compared to the cost of reprinting materials every time something changes.

Connecting the dots

Dynamic QR codes are the smarter choice for any restaurant planning to use QR code menus long term. They give you the flexibility to evolve your digital presence without wasting money on reprints, and the built-in analytics help you understand how guests are interacting with your menu.
